INFO: Tonico possessed exemplary finesse in his football playing. He rarely committed a foul, thus rightfully earning the first Belfort Duarte Award (named after an América player considered the most disciplined in Brazilian football), which was the highest honor for the country's most ethical players. With a solid marking ability, his greatest quality was his ability to drop deep and deliver precise crosses to the heads of opposing strikers, a deadly weapon against both defenders and goalkeepers. In 1942, he was called up to the Brazilian National Team that competed in the South American Championship in Uruguay.

Twice a two-time Paraná state champion with Coritiba (1941-1942 and 1946-1947), Tonico played as a half-back, forming part of the defensive line on the right, as if he were a defender. When necessary, however, he also played in attack with precise crosses into the opponent's area, quickly returning to defense. He won his fifth state championship with Coritiba in 1951, the year he ended his playing career.

Born in Florianópolis in 1914, Antônio Motta Espezim, better known as "Tonico," moved to Mafra as a child. Over the years, his footballing skills developed, transforming him from a simple pastime, a pastime, or even a game into a professional pursuit. It was in Mafra that Tonico began his career, playing as a right midfielder (equivalent to the current right-back) for Pery Ferroviário, where he stood out for his agility, preparation, marking, and discipline. This talent caught the attention of Coritiba Foot Ball Club, who in 1940 brought him to the Paraná capital to join what would become one of the most successful teams in its history.
