INFO: Known as Luiz Carvalho (Luiz de Carvalho to the Rio press), or by the nicknames "Rei da Virada" (he rotated his body quickly, always with the ball at his feet and surprising the opponent) and "El Maestro" (due to the goal he scored, in 1940, in Grêmio's great victory against Club Atlético Independiente of Argentina)

Spoiler: show
Luiz Carvalho was not exactly the typical figure of a center forward, or rather, a “center-forward” (as those in that position were called at the time). He wasn't very tall and was even slightly overweight. But the attentive eyes of General João de Deus Saraiva saw great potential in that young man. Blessed be the General!

In 1923, the General nominated the young man to Grêmio. At just 15 years old, the future “King of comebacks” was greeted for the first time in his life by the Grêmio fans, who were present in the old social pavilion at Estádio da Baixada.

Spoiler: show
At 17 years old, Luiz Carvalho was already a big player at Grêmio. The story goes that in his first years as a tricolor athlete, Luiz Carvalho had none other than Severino Franco da Silva, the “Lagarto”, as his great mentor.

High speed, above average intelligence, shooting with both legs and of course, an impressive skill that only he had: The turn. In the years that followed, this was the Grêmio star's trademark. Luiz Carvalho received the ball with his back to the opposing defense and when the defender thought about marking him, the ball was already inside the goalkeeper's net. This striking characteristic earned him a very appropriate nickname: The king of comebacks.
