Defense MindedINFO: He began his training at Guarany-BA as a left winger and then continued in Bahia's youth division, becoming perhaps the greatest full-back in the history of the Tricolor Baiano. He was agile, skillful and possessed a very powerful shot, which is why, during his time as a starter, he was the official free-kick taker.
Born in Salvador, Bahia, he started at Guarany as a left winger, transferring in 1954 to Bahia, where he remained as a player until 1967. An efficient marker, he belonged to the squad that won the Brazilian championship in 1959.
Alongside Frader and striker Carlito, Florisvaldo was one of three players picked from the main squad to be used as reinforcements for "Juventude Transviada" (a team assembled to compete in the 1957 Bahia Championship while the first team toured Europe, made up mostly of aspiring players, reserves, and youngsters forged in the club itself) for the first match of the international friendly against the powerful Benfica-POR, a match held at Fonte Nova and won by Bahia 4-1. The left-back for 'Juventude' was Pernambuco, but coach Armando Simões obtained permission from the club to use Florisvaldo in this international commitment. He also participated in the rematch, where Bahia would lose 2-1.
Due to his young age, he was a reserve on the Brazilian championship-winning team of 1959, playing in 5 of the 14 matches, but he was a starter at left-back for many years during the 13 seasons he spent at the club between 1955 and 1967 (and in two more friendlies in 1968), where he scored 37 goals wearing the tricolor jersey.
Florisvaldo was also part of the Bahia squad that toured Europe in 1957 and also the group that participated in the New York International Tournament in 1964. Years later, after ending his career, Florisvaldo, acting as Bahia's coach, won the state title in 1983, replacing the resigning Paulo Amaral.
Literally, a two-time Brazilian champion! Florisvaldo Muniz Barreto was the player/coach with the longest recorded history at the club. He arrived in 1955 and played until the end of the 1960s, totaling an incredible 546 games. Afterwards, he alternated between assistant and head coach for another 20 years, until leaving in the 1990s. His resume includes, in addition to the national titles of 1959 and 1988, more than 20 state championships. A true tricolor legend.
