Defense MindedINFO: Henrique dos Santos, known as Henricão, was a historic defender for Bahia, notable for his height and physical strength. He was a penalty area player, characterized by his imposing presence in defense and leadership on the field.
Playing Style:
Pension Area Defender: His main characteristic was playing centrally and solidly in the penalty area, being a "reference man" in defense.
Physical Strength and Height: At almost two meters tall, he was known for his physical stature, which earned him the nickname "Ebony Giant". This stature gave him an advantage in aerial duels.
Tough Marking: Described as a "vigorous" defender, his strengths lay in his robust marking and ability to neutralize opposing attackers.
Leadership and Experience: Henricão was a pillar of the Bahia team for over a decade, exercising leadership and transmitting confidence to his teammates.
He was a key player in Bahia's first Brazilian Championship (Taça Brasil) victory in 1959.
A tall and strong player, a good marker and highly efficient in aerial play, he had a physical stature that intimidated attackers, always tireless in protecting the Tricolor's defense. Henricão, as he was affectionately called by the fans, or 'Ebony Giant', a nickname coined by the Bahian radio broadcaster Carlos Lima (referring to his color and size), formed a formidable central defensive partnership with Vicente Arenari during the 1959 Taça Brasil tournament.
However, despite his imposing size, the Rio de Janeiro native Henricão distinguished himself by his loyalty, never using his physical stature to intimidate opponents. Henricão played for Bahia for 11 seasons, from 1957 to 1967. To give younger fans an idea of who he was, he resembled, due to being black and tall and having limited technical skills, fellow Tricolor defenders Advaldo, 'NBA' (1994), and Rafael Donato (2012/2013). He possessed, however, an uncommon fighting spirit and a better footballing ability than the two of them combined.
