Defense MindedINFO: Nadinho, considered the greatest goalkeeper in Bahia's history, had a playing style marked by a strong personality, leadership, and, curiously, by being a "goalkeeper-star with the smallest physical expressions."
Playing Style and Characteristics
Personality and Leadership: Nadinho was known for his great personality and for being a leader on the field, positively influencing the fans and the team.
Efficiency in Defenses: Despite having, physically, "smaller physical expressions" (being compared to Castilho in this aspect), he compensated with remarkable positioning and efficiency between the posts.
Positioning and Quick Reaction: His style suggested a more cerebral approach to the game, relying on excellent positioning and reaction time to prevent goals, instead of depending solely on acrobatic plays.
Dedication and Love for the Club: He played with great passion and dedication, which made him an idol for the fans, especially those of Bahia, where he holds the record for most games in that position, with 421 matches.
Career
Nadinho (Leonardo Cardoso) began his career at Vitória and shone brightly at Bahia, the club for which he was the first goalkeeper to win the Brazilian championship (Taça Brasil 1959) and the first Brazilian goalkeeper to compete in the Copa Libertadores de América (in 1960).
A strong goalkeeper, compared to gladiators, he was also agile in scoring. Gifted with great impulsion, he received the nickname Batman from the Argentine press for the flights he performed to defend high balls. Buttice arrived at Bahia in 1972. He was challenged by the tricolor fans, being one of the scapegoats for the loss of the Bahia championship in 1972. In 1973, however, he went through a great phase. He was part of the backbone put together by coach Evaristo de Macedo of the team that became state champion again, paving the way for a series that would culminate in a seventh championship.
