Defense MindedINFO: Defender Walter Hermínio Pongelupe (born in 1931) was a player with an imposing physique and "great jumping ability," being an undisputed starter in the defense of the teams he played for, such as Portuguesa and Uberaba SC. He is remembered as an "unforgettable" defender who wore the Portuguesa jersey for 12 years and was part of one of the greatest squads in the club's history. His playing style focused on being a solid and reliable defender, who stood out for his physical presence and leadership ability in the defensive line.
Hermínio, or Walter Hermínio Pongelupe, central defender and center-back for Portuguesa de Desportos in the 1950s and 1960s, died in São Paulo on February 22, 1994, at the age of 62. His body was buried in the São Paulo Cemetery, at the corner of Av. Dr. Arnaldo and Rua Cardeal Arcoverde, in Pinheiros, in the western part of São Paulo.
Born in the municipality of Santa Lúcia, São Paulo, on June 21, 1931, Hermínio was one of the best defenders in the history of Portuguesa, characterized by his vigor and loyalty.
He was a formidable marker of Pelé in the late 1950s and 60s, and was part of the best teams that Associação Portuguesa de Desportos produced in its history. Hermínio also played for the São Paulo State team on several occasions.
The defender was known for his discipline, determination, excellent positioning, and for always being willing to play out of position to help the team achieve victories.
He was one of the most successful markers of Pelé in the late 1950s, being highlighted by sports journalists as one of the country's leading defenders at the time.
Hermínio stayed at Portuguesa for 12 years, playing no fewer than 325 matches and achieving a total of 158 victories. He is one of the players who has defended the club the most times.
