One of the little-known facts is the origin of the nickname "Steel Squad." The term caught on with fans in 1939, when Figueirense won both the State Championship and the City Championship. At the time, the team's star was midfielder Hubert Beck, nicknamed "Galego Beck." "Goalkeeper Silas Nunes said it was the Steel Squad, and it stuck. Figueirense had a German who never gave up on a ball. Today, nobody uses that term anymore. It's just Figueira," he revealed. Beck played for Figueirense from 1932 to 1940 and also for Avaí – 1942 to 1945.
