Balanced MindedINFO: A boy of good education and training, Paulinho studied in a private college and in his spare time played for the Parthenon, an amateur team in the same neighborhood where he lived.
Paulinho arrived in the amateur divisions of the International Sport Club in 1950. He initially played as a right-hander and was later adapted as a defender.
Possessor of a technique very accurate, the great domain of ball did not prevent him from being an efficient vigilante in the marking.
Paulinho also stood out for the strong spirit of leadership, mainly in the orientation of the companions who were considered bohemian.
This leadership was evidenced when receiving the nickname of "Captain Piranha", a reference also associated with the jagged teeth.
After approximately a year in the Aspirants of the International, Paulinho was used in the main cast in 1951, the year in which he also signed his first contract.
A gaucho champion in the 1951, 1952 and 1953 seasons, Paulinho was recognized as a player ahead of his time, especially when he was executed by the right defensive corridor, where he became a real expert!
It was one of the rare sides that knew how to support the attack with efficiency, determining quality so that its name was remembered in the selected gaucho and later in the canary.
These attributes soon aroused the interest of the Vasco da Gama Racing Club. The insights have been well and the Carioca players have spared no effort to rely on their football.
The deal with Vasco da Gama was only closed in 1954, for 800 thousand cruzeiros, one of the most expensive negotiations of the time.
In the Vasco, Paulinho played in some opportunities as a defender, although publicly declare that he did not feel more happy in that position.
