Colquhoun was a centre-back who spent most of his career at Sheffield United: 433 matches and 23 goals from 1968 to 1978. In his early career he played for Bury and West Bromwich Albion − teams where he played also in the sides of the defence − while at the end of it he played in the United States at Detroit Express and Washington Diplomats, where he retired in 1981. He won 9 caps for Scotland between 1971 and 1973.
Regular central defender for many years at Sheffield United, Colquhoun was a steely and uncompromising hard tackler and leader of the defence. He liked to play rough but fair, going always for the ball. He was cool in defence, strong and powerful in the air. His very good heading ability was a danger for the opponents and earned him many goals at Sheffield United.
