INFO: High defender, strong, extremely classic and of exceptional technique, he marked the season for playing without fail. Legend has it that in the only time he met requests from leaders to make a mistake in Larry, Inter striker at the time, ended up hurting. I did not know how to act like that. For him, the marking had to be clean.
This was how he aroused the attention of Grêmio in 1954. Aírton played in Força e Luz, Porto Alegre team with headquarters near the Hospital de Clínicas today. In exchange for the player, the Grêmio ceded to the Force and Light a wooden pavilion of the time of the Baixada, and this ended up being incorporated to the name of Aírton, that happened to be called Pavilion.
He was seven times summoned to the Seleção, was in Santos in 1960, returned to Porto Alegre and remained here until the end of his career. He was so attached to his friends and Grêmio that he lived his entire life in a house near the Olympic.
For many, Aírton just did not settle in the Seleção and Santos because he had too much style. Did one of his moves lead the technicians to madness? at least those who did not know him well: he received the ball on the side of the area and returned to the keeper of letters, often over the attacker. He did this even in one of the training sessions at Santos de Pelé.
Aírton was part of that group of players, from both sides, who broke the barriers of rivalry. He was accepted at Inter, had friends there, used to move fearlessly through rival environments, just as Cláudio Duarte, Larry and Valdomiro, among others, could walk without any disturbance among the gremistas. Aírton, like others, was from a family of professionals who broke with the rivalry.
