He started his professional career at Rosenborg where he played 95 matches between 1995 and 1998. Rosenborg's fans remember him as a hero specially for the goal he scored a heading against Milan, jumping higher than Baresi and Maldini, in the 1996-97 UEFA Champions League and that goal made the team being the second Norwegian team to reach the quarter-finals of the competition. He then played for Liverpool 65 matches between 1998 and 2001 but only 4 in the 2000-01 season because of an injury who forced him to retire two years later. He won the UEFA Cup in 2000-01 with
the Reds and was called up 20 for Norway national team.
Heggem was offensively oriented fullback, but also, could cover any position on the right flank. He was fast and agile, and was able to beat the opponent and deliver a good cross to a teammate. In dribbling, he mostly rely on his agility and quick moves, but also possessed decent close control, but on the other hand, he always had problems when trapping the ball. He was dangerous in the air, and always went in opponents penalty box when a corner kick is on.
