Fofana is a former centre-back and left-back. He spent his entire career at Hafia FC in the 1960s and 1970s during the club's golden era. He represented Guinea from 1968 to 1977 and capped 30 times.
Fofana was a combative defender who always showed a sense of duty. He was calm, confident, imposing, physically strong, and capable in the air. During a 2012 interview, Fofana explained how united his team was because whenever he wasn't in good shape, his teammates would cover for him as not to show weaknesses.
