INFO:
Mulamba was a centre-forward who could also play as a winger. His career started in 1964 at Renaissance du Kasaï. He left in 1971 to play a season with AS Bantous. He then had his most successful time at Vita Club where he played from 1972 to 1988, scoring 116 goals in 224 matches and winning the 1973 African Champions League. He represented the Democratic Republic of the Congo (back then Zaire) from 1967 to 1976, scoring at least 10 goals in over 20 games. In 1974, he won the Africa Cup of Nations and participated to the FIFA World Cup. He holds the record for most goals scored in a single AFCON tournament with 9 in 1974.
Mulamba made himself known for his physical power and agility despite a muscular frame. While he was prolific and accurate in Africa, he liked to hold the ball then pass it accurately to the wingers who moved forward during counter-attacks. He also had notable positioning and a seemingly excellent leap. Unfortunately, he didn't have the chance to show these abilities at the World Cup, also due to the lack of balls coming from his teammates. Nonetheless, Mulamba showed glimpses of pace off the ball, especially in acceleration. He could use both feet but was a natural right-footed.
During the World Cup, Mulamba showed his ability to play winger as Zaire's coach often asked him to move wide and create space for his teammates. Otherwise, Mulamba would attempt to cut inside. His lack of defensive prowess was especially visible during the match against Yugoslavia as he barely moved away from positions close or inside the box. He attempted several dribbles against the Yugoslavian team but managed only a couple.
A 1975 scouting report from RFC Liège described Mulamba as being « tactically naïve by European standards, but his athleticism and first-touch control were world-class; he struggled with offside traps ».
