Mbokani is a former centre-forward. His career started in 2004 at New Bel'Or in his native country DR Congo. One year later, he transferred to Mazembe where he scored 67 goals in 72 matches between 2005 and 2007. He was loaned briefly to Anderlecht for the 2006-07 season and sold to Standard Liège in 2007. He played 111 games in Liège between 2007 and 2010, scoring 45 goals. Following unsuccessful experiences with Monaco and Wolfsburg during the 2010-11 season, he returned to Anderlecht for a two-year spell in which he scored 42 goals in 69 appearances between 2011 and 2013. He then signed for Dynamo Kyiv where he had a solid first season with 16 goals in 33 matches, but the second season was less impressive with only 3 goals in 13 games. The two following years, on loan at Norwich City and Hull City, were also not good. Dynamo Kyiv decided to keep him for the 2017-18 season and Mbokani scored 12 times in 31 appearances. His next experience turned out good as he spent three years with Royal Antwerp, scoring 52 goals in 105 matches between 2018 and 2021. He retired in 2024 after one-year stints with Kuwait SC, SK Beveren, and FC Noah. He capped for DR Congo 49 times between 2005 and 2022, scoring 22 goals.
Mbokani was a good striker, physically strong, solid from a technical standpoint, and excellent in the air thanks to an accurate heading ability and an impressive max jump. He lacked notable pace and agility, though he could make good short sprints towards the goal. However, his physique and technique allowed him to defend the ball before passing it or to get past one or two opponent by himself. His lack of pace often influenced his reaction when moving in front of the goal to receive a decisive pass. Despite his strong physique, he was smart in one-on-one challenges against opposing defenders as he would look for the foul in many occasions. His shots usually were well balanced between power and accuracy but he could kick the ball with great power when he wanted. Also a player of great sacrifice, he moved a lot outside the box, helping his team recovering the ball in midfield, and occasionally even falling back deep into his own area to clear the ball with a header.
