Soumah is a former sweeper and centre-back. His career started in Cameroon at Tonnerre de Yaoundé where he played from 1988 to 1991. He then signed for French team SC Bastia where he played from 1991 to 1993 and 1994 to 2004, making a total of 331 appearances and scoring 2 goals, both in his first spell. He played one season for Valenciennes in 1993-94. He represented Guinea from 1988 to 2004, earning 69 caps and scoring 2 goals.
Soumah was a solid defender who possessed timing, anticipation skills, covering ability, and good heading. He was rarely aggressive as he preferred to wait for his opponent and attempt a tackle at the right moment rather than being rushy. His positioning made up for his lack of speed as he was overall quite slow, especially over longer distance and on the ball. Moreover, his lack of agility made him movements not smooth either when defending or when he had the ball to his feet. His decent technique, though, allowed him to be a good libero who carried the ball from his team's area to the midfield, and he sometimes would even try a dribbling or a volley clearance. He was also accurate with both feet. Generally, Soumah would rather pass the ball as soon as he saw a well positioned teammate. Unfortunately, while his short passes were always simple but effective, his long passes were very frequent but often inaccurate or easy to read for the opposing defenders.
