Garner was a centre forward. He's regarded as one of Blackburn Rovers' greatest legends, having scored 192 goals in 565 matches for the team from 1978 to 1992, even though mostly in Second Division. However many Rovers' supporters consider him the best player in the club's history, even ahead of Alan Shearer. He played also for West Bromwich Albion, Wycombe Wanderers and Torquay United, retiring in 1996.
Garner was a consistent striker. Not very fast but built with a strong physique, he was a combative forward who resisted well to 1-on-1 challenges and liked to track back to the midfield, helping his teammates fighting for the ball. He had a nice general technique, being accurate with both feet, having a good dribbling and the ability to score in difficult situations. An unselfish player, he could also make accurate short passes or even crosses to the box when he moved to the flank.
