Konsel is a former goalkeeper. His career began in 1982 at First Vienna. He spent almost his entire career at Rapid Wien from 1985 to 1997, playing 500 matches. He then had a two-year spell at Roma, playing 45 games. He retired in 2000 after a season at Venezia. He gained 43 caps for Austria and was featured at the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
One of Austrian best ever goalkeepers, Konsel was reliable and consistent. He was capable of catching crosses and powerful long range shots. He possessed excellent reflexes, good speed when coming off the goal and braveness to challenge the incoming forwards in 1-on-1 situations. He also was gifted with decent technique, footwork and teamwork, thanks to which he was comfortable outside the box, kicking the ball away or passing the ball with the left foot.
