Busuttil is a former attacking midfielder or secondary striker. His career began in 1979 at Rabat Ajax, Malta, where he spent four seasons, scoring 47 goals in 113 matches. After a short experience in Italian lower leagues ─ 20 games and 8 goals for Verbania ─ he transferred to Belgian club Genk, where he had the best time of his career, scoring 45 times in 166 appearances in six seasons. He came back to Malta in 1994, playing 153 matches and scoring 66 goals for Sliema Wanderers in eight seasons. He retired in 2002. He's Malta's most capped player with 113 games and the second ever top scorer ─ behind Michael Mifsud ─ with 23 goals.
Regarded as one of the best ever Maltese players, Busuttil was gifted with great technique and dribbling, fantastic speed and a very good sense of goal. He was accurate with both feet and a very good header thanks to a good leap. He was capable of using first time touches, either for shooting or delivering short passes. Despite long rangers weren't Busuttil's specialty, his shots from outside the area were a threat due to their power. He liked to challenge the opponents with dribbling but he was unselfish and often preferred passing the ball to a near teammate. He also tracked back to help the defence, sometimes even near his own goal, trying to intercept balls and cover spaces.
