Wagstaffe is a fomer left side midfielder or winger. He played 161 matches and scored 8 goals for Manchester City from 1960 to 1964. Then he transferred to Wolverhampton, where he stayed the majority of his career: 404 games and 32 goals from 1964 to 1976. He played also for Los Angeles Wolves, Blackburn Rovers and Blackpool. He retired in 1979. Despite being considered one of the greatest in the history of Wolverhampton, he never capped for England due to the national team coach Alf Ramsey not using wingers.
Wagstaffe was an incredibly fast player with outstanding technique, devastating dribbling and a distinctive dashing style. He was able to switch to the right side during the match thanks to a good versatility. He was gifted with a magical left foot but was able with the right as well. He usually hunched over the ball near the left touchline before dropping a shoulder and start one of his characteristic blazing runs. He wasn't tall nor strong but he had incredible balanced, enough agility to challenge and daze the defenders with sudden changes of direction and bursts of acceleration over short distances, running past them one by one. Moreover, he never complained everytime he got sticks from them. He took corners and free kick and had his own particular way to take them: he hunched the shoulder into position to control the delivery, also giving the ball speed and effect. In fact, he was a tantalising crosser, with Derek Dougan and John Richard being the main receivers of his accurate balls. His pinpoint crosses from the side usually came after Wagstaffe turned his marker inside out with his speed and trickery. His abilities and skillful fluidity were crucial for Wolverhampton success, making a mockery of Alf Ramsey's adversion towards attacking wingers, who hold the ball near the touchline. He wasn't a prolific scorer but he was gifted with a powerful shot. Therefore some of his goals were long range shots.
