Palmer was a right back who spent almost his entire career at Wolverhampton Wanderers, playing 495 matches from 1971 to 1986. Before his final season, he played at Burnley in 1984-85.
Palmer had a thin physique and was gifted with good speed and reaction. Therefore he preferred using efficient tackles or anticipating his opponent instead of challenging him in a physical duel. He also suffered against attackers who tried to go past him with dribblings. He liked to run forward to support the attack but he also scored 13 goals for Wolverhampton. He had a good distribution of the ball, especially with accurate long crosses that could become potential assists. Sometimes he even took free kicks from the side. However he was effective when he had the time to think and enough space to deliver the pass. In fact he likely missed the pass when he had to hurry or simply delivered awful balls when he had to hit it with a first touch.
