Defence MindedINFO:Thickett was a defender who spent almost his entire career at Sheffield United, playing 310 matches and scored once from 1893 to 1904. He was the club's first choice right back for many seasons. He played also for Doncaster Rovers, Rotherham Town, Bristol City and capped twice for England.
Thickett was a heavy and strong defender, quite big and sturdy for the time. He was a hard tackler with high work-rate that made him become a fan favourite. However he was also considered one of the fastest defenders in the league thanks to a surprising turn of speed. In his late career he began to suffer several injuries and to emphasize his willingness, it was said that he played with broken ribs and ruptured muscles, wearing around 50-yards of bandages and stiffened canvas after having drunk a huge amount of whiskey to deaden the pain.
