INFO:Ao was a wing half or centre back who played as striker in his early career. One of the most important players and figures in the history of Indian football, he spent his entire career at Mohun Bagan from 1943 to 1952. He was the first ever captain of India national team. He capped for India in at least 6 official games.
Not too imposing but still dominant in both midfield and defensive line, Ao was deployed mostly in front of the two full backs at Mohun Bagan, forming the defence known at the time as the "Great Wall of China". Ao was a hardworking player, gifted with superb sense of timing in the tackle. He was a great team leader thanks to his commendable sportsmanship and examplary spirit of sacrifice. Moreover, he shined with the ball on his feet, showing brilliant football skills. In one occasion during the Durand final against Hyderabad City Police in 1950, he proved to be capable even as goalkeeper: Mohun Bagan was leading 2-0 when their goalkeeper got injured and Ao replaced him as substitutions weren't yet allowed at the time. The match ended 2-2 but Ao still performed heroically.
