He played from the late 1950s throughout the 1960s and retired in the early 1970s. He won international caps for India from 1960 to 1971. He was a key player during the 1962 Asian Games and 1964 Asian Cup, forming India's greatest defence with Jarnail Singh and Nayeem. He proved to be very versatile when he had to replace the unavailable Singh in the middle of the three-man defence. Ghosh is regarded by many as India's most technically gifted defender and some consider him the best ever Indian to play in his position. He was a very fit defender who impressed for his strong physique and was known for his leadership and excellent anticipation. Despite being acclaimed for his excellence from a technical standpoint, he was probably the defender who least pushed forward as India coach Rahim knew that Indian defenders weren't as fast as European or African ones and preferred having them to stay in the back as much as possible. However, it's said that he could dribble past opposing strikers in his own box. Moreover, he had the ability to do quick double footed tackles and use both feet to clear the ball away: he used to wait for the opponent to come with the ball on his right foot, then use the left to block him and the right to take the ball away. His abilities with the head and volleys were also very good. On top of that, he could distribute the ball well much like his teammate Nayeem — who though was likely better in this aspect. |
