Chhetri is a centre forward, secondary striker or left winger. He played for many Indian clubs: Mohun Bagan, JCT, East Bengal, Dempo, Chirag United, Churchill Brothers, and Mumbai City. However, he had his best time at Bengaluru, playing there since 2013. He scored 108 goals in 234 matches so far. He had short spells in the USA at Kansas City Wizards and in Portugal with the reserve team of Sporting CP. In 2009, he even signed a three-year deal with QPR but the British government denied him a work permit as India wasn't in the top 70 of the FIFA world ranking. Captain of India in many occasions, he's the national team record holder for goals and appearances with 84 in 131 matches. He won the 2011 Arjuna Award and was named by AFC "Asian Icon" in 2018.
Chhetri proved to be a prolific scorer since a young age, even though his first club coach at Mohun Bagan Subrata Bhattacharya thought that he wouldn't be able to score a lot due to his short physique. However, the striker showed a more than decent shooting ability. Gifted with good pace, he can run off the ball while shouting his teammates to pass him the ball. He has a great eye for goal, and whenever there's a set piece, he waits in the box among the towering defenders, reacting quickly to take advantage of his decent heading ability. He possesses good technique and accuracy on both feet. When he's outside the box, he can deliver outstanding long range shots. Also an able penalty and free kick taker, he can give the ball a nice curling. On top of that, he's excellent in reading the game.
