He played mostly for East Bengal, where he was captain in 1972 and 1973. He was successful also later with Mohun Bagan. An international for many years, he was elected the best defender in Asia after the 1970 Asian Games. He had two of his finest, most memorable performances at the 1970 IFA Shield final against Iran's PAS Teheran, and in the 1973 DCM Cup final against North Korea's Dok Ro Gang. Regarded as the greatest ever right back in the history of Indian football, Karmakar was a very short but brilliant, capable defender. Considered East Bengal's crown jewel during the 1970s, he was distinguished for his man marking ability, excellent technique and anticipation. These qualities allowed him to compensate for his lack of height and strength. When facing a striker, he kept watching the ball without losing focus, so that it was hard for the opponent to dribble him. Due to his defensive skills, he managed to deny everything to legendary Japanese player Kunishige Yamamoto at the 1968 Mexico Olympics — even playing as centre back at one point — until the striker managed to score the decisive header. |
