He was the first Indian to play in Europe as he took part to two trial matches with Celtic in 1936 (he boarded the ship to Britain after a match between India and China without telling anyone). In the same year, he capped once for All India XI. He had his best time at the end of his career, winning five consecutive Calcutta League titles from 1934 to 1938 with Mohammedan. He played also for East Bengal among other teams. Regarded as one of the greatest ever Indian players, Salim was a fan favourite thanks to his incredible talent, ball control, dribbling, accurate crosses, shots, lobs. He always knew the correct height of the pass, making his ball distribution one of the biggest attractions in India. In the couple of games he played with Celtic, he astonished everyone despite playing barefeet. His first match was a 5-1 win against Hamilton Accies, where he scored a penalty with a great shot − it's said the kick was so powerful that the goalkeeper couldn't stop the ball after touching it. In the second game, won 7-1 against Galston, he hypnotised the crowd by balancing the ball on his big toe, letting it run down to the little one, twirling it, hopping on one foot around the defender, flicking the ball to the box. All seven goals came from the outcome of his moves, and three of them were directly assisted by him. The balls he crossed simply had to be tapped in goal. He manipulated the ball oustandingly, always touching it exactly like he wanted. Celtic tried to sign him but Salim decided to go back to India. |
