He was active mostly in the 1970s, having his best time in the late stage of his career, when he played for East Bengal from 1975 to 1977, and Mohun Bagan from 1977 to 1982. He had stints also at Gorkha Brigade and Mafatlal Mills. He scored a hat-trick for East Bengal in his debut match against Rajasthan Club, and two during the 1975 IFA Shield final in a historic 5-0 win against rivals Mohun Bagan. An international player, he was surprisingly excluded from India squad for the 1978 Asian Games, despite him being the captain, due to India's coach belief that Thapa's movements slowed down. Renowned for his acrobatic back volleys and overhead bicycle kicks, Thapa was gifted with great instinct, shot technique, dribbling skills, speed, explosiveness. He could deliver shots on goal out of nowhere. He scored two of his most memorable goals with East Bengal jersey, both against Mohun Bagan: one was a remarkable, perfect bicycle kick whilst the other one was a curling shot that followed a quick inside dribbling to overcome three defenders. |
