He played mostly for Mohun Bagan in three stints: from 1974 to 1976, from 1979 to 1983, and in 1984-85 when he retired. He played also for East Bengal from 1976 to 1979, and Mohammedan in 1983-84. He was an international player from 1972 to 1977. In 1976, he became the first to score a hat-trick in a Durand Cup final, doing so in a match between Mohun Bagan and JCT. Considered one of the best Indian wingers during the 1970s and one of the most exciting in the history of Indian football, Ulaganathan was known for his pace on the ball, footwork, brilliant close control. Moreover, he was regarded as one of the best crossers of his generation. He wasn't a prolific scorer as his personal goal record in a single season is 9 in 1977. In fact, Ulaganathan's effectiveness was in his dashes and movements down the flanks. One of his biggest rivals, Sudhit Chatterjee, recalled his quickness as his key quality, describing him as arguably the fastest winger in India during the 1970s. A very fair player, he never received a yellow card. He was instrumental in the occasion of the quickest ever goal in the history of Mohun Bagan vs East Bengal derby: it was scored in a 1976 match after 13 seconds, when Mohammed Habib passed the ball to Ulaganathan on the left; as legendary right back Sudhir Karmakar couldn't stop the ball, Ulaganathan sprinted quickly, dribbling the defender before crossing the ball for Mohammed Akbar, who scored with a header. |
