INFO:
Varese was a left inside. His career began in 1909 at Casale, where he stayed for six seasons, scoring 37 goals in 83 matches. Thanks to his 23 goals in 29 games during the legendary 1913-14 Italian championship, he was a key player for the Casale squad that won the title. Between 1919 and 1921 he played for Milan and in the first season he scored − like he did in the title winning season − 23 goals but this time in only 18 matches. The second season with the Rossoneri wasn't though as much successful. He capped 5 times for Italy and holds the record for the fastest goal in the history of Italian football, when he scored after only five seconds.
Not always prolific, Varese was considered though a true scorer − proved by the two aforementioned seasons. He was energic and gifted with limitless will. He preferred using mainly the left foot. From the reports of the 1910s, he seemed to be very offensive, constantly running at good pace towards the goal. He liked to moving down the flank, looking for a cross or a challenge with a defender. In the second case, he sometimes gained a corner. Mainly left-footed, he tried to shoot many times, missing though most chances especially the easiest ones. When playing for Italy, he wasn't as effective as he was with Casale. In a match against France he was often offside, in one against Austria he kept trying powerful long range shots from even 30 meters without being enough dangerous, in a game against Switzerland he missed easy goals by sending the ball over the bar. The reason of those bad performances was probably the rushness he sometimes had. What he always did well though was proving to be a superb passer of the ball and assist-man. He had a great partner in Giovanni Gallina since the two continuously exchanged passes throughout the match, either when playing for Casale or Italy. Varese's crosses in particular were threatening for the defenders. In a second game against Switzerland, he took a corner and delivered a perfect cross for a teammate who scored. During an Italian Prima Categoria match, a wonderful goal − acclaimed by the attendance − came out from one of his fast crosses. In the 1913-14 Prima Categoria final against Lazio, he scored the second and definitive goal of the match − arguably the most important of his career − directly from corner kick.
