Defence MindedINFO:De Giovanni was a goalkeeper. He was Casale's second choice until 1914, when Attilio Gallina retired. From then, he was considered on of the best Italian keepers. He played a total of 120 matches with the
Nerostellati from 1913 to 1927. He played also for Novara. At the beginning of the 1920s, he managed to take part at some unofficial international games and was almost called up to play for the main national team in more occasions.
De Giovanni was a very short goalkeeper, gifted though with great like-cat reaction. He was a threat for the opposing strikers because he used to target the man rather than the ball in 1-on-1 duels. He felt comfortable at stopping either easy shots or the most insidious ones, was always ready to move between the posts and reject the ball in magnificent ways, diving and risking to hurt himself in multiple occasions, making incredible leaps that made the crowd go in ecstasies. He was maybe less effective at catching the shots, especially from long range.
