BalancedINFO:Melchiori was a defensive midfielder capable to play also on the sides and when necessary as central midfielder or sweeper. His career is mostly related to Casale, where he played from 1985 to 1990, from 1996 to 2000 and from 2002 to 2005, for a total of 308 league matches and 35 goals. He had the chance to play 20 Serie A games for Lazio in 1991-92 and 28 for Lecce in 1993-94. He played three seasons with the Giallorossi, appearing in 99 matches and scoring 8 times in all competitions. He played also for other clubs including Reggiana and Modena.
Melchiori showed his good characteristics since his young age at Casale: he was a versatile playmaker, gifted with technical and agonistic qualities. He was very effective in attack but also in defence. When he played as defensive midfielder, he acted mainly as brave enforcer, costantly pushing forward. Able with both feet, he was gifted with a decently accurate but quite powerful shot that he often looked for after going past a couple of defenders with spectacular dribblings − which he was very good at − and quick movements. However he preferred getting inside the box after receiving the ball and beat the goalkeeper with a straight diagonal shot or a lob. His main scoring quality though seemed to be the header ability: many times he ran behind the opposing defence or beat them in elevation before delivering an accurate header, showing great timing of reaction. He was also an assist-man, particularly able at crossing the ball from the back or the flank. In fact, when he was used in a slightly more advanced position than his original one, he was the player who set up the actions throughout the match. He was also the team's free kick taker: his most memorable free kicks were two straight shots that ended powerfully at the intersection of the posts. Due to his ability from such position, he occasionally took penalties but they didn't seem to be his specialty at all. He wasn't too strong but could hold the opposing attacks, actively and properly controlling the attackers. For this reason he was used as sweeper when necessary and, in this positions, he gave reliability to the defence, playing always with intelligence, not fearing to stay in the middle of a melee to push the ball away or saving it on the goal line, showing again good reaction. He rarely had an underwhelming performance, occasionally losing control of the ball and giving the opponents the opportunity to score, but he was in general always one of the best of the match, even when he wasn't in good conditions.
In Serie A, Melchiori proved to be tactically neat and important especially for a smaller team like Lecce. Playing basically only as defensive midfielder and sweeper, he showed good technique and heading ability as well as accurate fast long balls forward and powerful long range shots. However, he understandably had problems in a superior category. Sometimes he didn't live up to the match, having underwhelming performances, especially against big clubs. He often pushed forward and was the main free kick taker at Lecce but scoring wasn't as easy as it was in Serie C. He showed more toughness but that led many times to committ penalty fauls and in some occasions to be sent off with a red card, proving to be defensively fragile.
