Gabaretta was a goalkeeper. His career began at Floriana Tigers in 1936 but his abilities were recognized by St. George's and the team immediately bought him. His first season was remarkable but at the end of it, he had to join the navy. He played also for Floriana, Sliema Wanderers, Valletta and Rabat Ajax. He retired from first-class football in 1952 but still played in minor leagues even through the 1960s.
Gabaretta is regarded as Malta's best ever goalkeeper. He was gifted with great personality and goalkeeping skills. His reliability between the posts was always a psychological motivation for his teammates and a demoralization for the opponents. During his first season at St. George's, he had an outstanding − possibly his best ever − performance in 1937 against Ferencvárosi: his team lost 3-1 and Gabaretta suffered two penalties and an unlucky own goal but he amused the crowd with numerous spectacular saves, blocking volley after volley and rolling from side to side throughout the whole game. A contender as best game ever is the 1945-46 FA Trophy final against Second Division team Ħamrun Spartans: Gabaretta was playing for Sliema Wanderers and the modest opponents constantly attacked Sliema's goal; the goalkeeper though saved everything he could despite having an injured arm and he was mainly responsible for the 2-1 win for his team. Another contender as best performance is the one he had on 15th December 1946 in a league match against Valletta: he was playing again for St. George's, the day was very rainy and the pitch was very heavy; Valletta's great striker Salvinu Schembri did anything to score but Gabaretta was his equal, making several first-class saves; at some point Schembri delivered the ball across the goal and towards Vassallo; his shot was rejected by defender Zammit but the ball came back to Schembri who hit first-time on the run; the shot was directed like a bullet to the left side of the goal but Gabaretta beat speed, force and direction of the ball and rejected it in corner. Before he was 20, he was mainly used as centre forward and for that reason he occasionally played in that position in situations of emergency during his long career.
