Li Fusheng was a goalkeeper. His professional career began in 1975 and he played only for Bayi, where he retired in 1984. He gained 36 caps for China even though some sources report a total of 119 appearances. He was included in the 1976 AFC Asian Cup squad but didn't play. He was though a regular starter during the 1982 FIFA World Cup qualifiers that ended with China losing the play-off against New Zealand.
Regarded as one of China's best ever goalkeepers, Li Fusheng was nicknamed "Iron gate" due to his penalty saving ability. One of the most memorable penalty saves came in a match against Asian champions Kuwait on 8th October 1981, when he stretched his body and dived to the left to firmly catch the ball despite him having left that side quite empty. He was shorter than most Chinese goalkeepers at the time but possessed excellent positional sense, was very flexible and could command the defenders line in order to make them attack and defend calmly.
