Nicholl was a centre forward, capable of playing also as winger on either side and in his late career even in defensive roles. He spent his entire career at Sliema Wanderers from 1932 to 1957, winning the Premier Division ten times and the FA Trophy nine times. He was named Maltese Player of the Year in 1956, the perfect final award before his retirement.
One of Malta's most legendary players, Nicholl possessed an innate scoring ability with either foot in addition to fine technical qualities, a formidable aerial power and deadly headers that allowed him to score at least 95 goals. He was very versatile as he performed well in all the aforementioned positions.
