INFO:Edwards was a goalkeeper. His career started in 1931 at Hibernians. He joined Sliema Wanderers in 1935, winning three Premier Leagues, two FA Trophys and two Cassar Cups between 1935 and 1939, when he signed for St. George's. After the World War, he came back to Sliema Wanderers and then Hibernians, retiring in the late 1940s. He was called up for Malta national team 16 times.
Regarded as one Malta's greatest ever goalkeepers, Edwards distinguished himself for the way he controlled his area. At the time, goalkeepers rarely used to stay out of the goal. Instead, he acted as additional full-back, sending his defenders forward when his team was attacking.
During his time at St. George's, he helped the team winning the first ever Christmas Cup in the 1939-40 season by saving a penalty against Royal Air Force in the late minutes of the final.
In a match against Hajduk Split on April 1 1945, Edwards was out of position. Miljenko Batinić took advantage of the situation and delivered a long range shot. Malta goalkeeper ran back and managed to deflect the ball before it went past the goal-line. Unfortunately, it then hit the post and rebounded back to Vojko Andrijašević, who scored the winning goal with a header while Edwards was still on the ground.
On February 1 1947, when he was playing for Sliema Wanderers in a match against Hibernians, he saved the ball in several occasions, punching it everytime a cross came in, especially from set piece. However, he had to face centre forward Sammut in many one-on-one situations. At the time the charges on the goalkeeper wasn't considered foul as long as he was keeping the ball. Edwards resisted all the challenges until he decided that he had enough and tackled the striker, receiving a red card.
