INFO:
Sammut was a centre forward or right inside. He played almost his entire career for Sliema Wanderers ─ except the 1939-40 season at St. George's ─ winning five Premier Leagues and three FA Trophys. He tragically died in 1943, a few days after he got hit by a car while he was riding his bicycle on November 11. He was only 28 and still at the peak of his career, which was successful since he was very young.
Still remembered in Malta and regarded as a great footballer, a natural centre forward turned into right inside with the arrival of Tony Nicholl, Sammut was highly gifted, quick, elegant and strong. He was capable of keeping the ball to his feet, dashing and dribbling along the goal-line. He would then make a darting run around his opponent and score from a favourable position or pass the ball back to a better placed teammate. His deadly dribbling often led the defenders to tackle him hard but he kept giving as much as he could. His brilliancy wasn't shown only in flashes as he was reliable and consistent.
He had his first great performance during the 1931-32 Premier League, when he may have not even been 18 years old, in a match against Ħamrun Spartans. It ended 6-1 or 6-2 and Sammut was the hero of the match, scoring four of his team's goals. The first goal came right after the kick-off: Sammut received a pass and dribbled two defenders, who were trying a tackle, before beating the goalkeeper with a great shot. He scored another goal in the second half: Sliema was leading 3-1 when Sammut shot to the upper part of the goal after a brilliant dribbling. The opposing team decided to tighten the marking on Sammut but he still beat the defenders and the goalkeeper on the run. The fourth goal was a more classic one.
