Compiani was a goalkeeper. He started and ended his career at Cremonese, making 101 appearances from 1921 to 1927 and 5 in the 1937-38 season. He had his best time at Milan, where he played 220 matches from 1927 to 1936. Compiani was an excellent goalkeeper, efficient, reliable and consistent. He earned several nicknames like Tenaglia and Gatto Nero due to his acrobatic style, his brilliancy at saving high balls and quickness at diving. Moreover, he was brave and solid, daring in melee, very strong in one-on-one situations.
