Briffa is a right side midfielder, right wing back or right back, capable of playing as defensive or central midfielder. His career started in 1998 at Birkirkara, where he played until 2007 (excluding a loan to Pietà Hotspurs in 2002) plus a second stint between 2019 and 2021, for a total of over 140 matches and at least 11 goals. He had his most successful time at Valletta from 2009 to 2017, making 266 appearances, scoring 28 goals, providing nearly 30 assists and winning numerous titles. He played also for Sliema Wanderers, Gżira United and signed for Mosta in 2021. He played 100 matches for Malta, scoring once. He was named Maltese Player of the Year in 2011 and 2016.
Regarded as one of the most gifted Maltese players of his generation, Briffa proved for years to be instrumental in the midfield of any team he played for. He has remarkable technical qualities that allow him to control the ball well and sometimes dribble his opponents even though he doesn't seem too agile in the movement. He's a good assist-man, capable of deliver numerous well placed short passes and less frequently mid-height sharp crosses that have speed and accuracy. He has solid speed, especially when he makes short bursts, but he isn't too strong despite having a good physique. On the other hand, his notable height allow him to score with headers every now and then. He's more focused on the offense but he can also be helpful in the defence, in particular to anticipate the opponent and recover the ball.
