INFO:West was a full back. He spent his best years at Liverpool, playing there from 1903 to 1909 and in 1910-11 for a total of 141 appearances and 6 goals. While he wasn't always in the starting XI, he was a regular first choice during the successful 1905-06 season, and in 1907-08. He played also for Barnsley, Reading, and Notts County among others. He retired in 1920.
West was considered one of the best defenders and possibly the classiest in Liverpool squad during the early years of the 1900s. He was an ideal full back with a perfect style of play. In fact, he was reliable in the tackle, accurate in the comeback, in possession of an always calm composure even under pressure. He relied on his defensive skills, using a minimum of strength as he didn’t have a big physique. He instead waited for the opponent to come before easily choosing the right moment for making an intervention. His style was in contrast with that of Dunlop but the two defenders complemented each other. A good penalty taker, he scored 4 of his goals from penalty, and 3 of them in the 1905-06 season.
