INFO:
Theobald was a midfielder. He spent almost his entire career at Hibernians from 1958 to 1974, making nearly 200 appearances, winning the Maltese Premier League in 1966-67 and 1968-69. He hardly missed a match through injury, was rarely substituted and never suspended. After leaving Hibernians, he transferred to Żebbuġ Rangers, where he retired in 1977. He was named twice Maltese footballer of the year in 1967 and 1971. He capped for Malta 18 times, scoring twice.
Regarded as one of Malta's greatest players, Theobald as midfielder had no equal. His skill, passing ability and tactical intelligence made him an automatic choice for both Hibernians and Malta. Nicknamed "the bird", he was a dazzling player, gifted with a thin body and an elegant style, thanks to which he moved nimbly through the opposing defence as he was flying. His dribbling ability was so great that he was compared to that of his father Turu Theobald who, at the time, was considered the best dribbler Malta ever had. Eddie was likely effective even in running off the ball: in a 9-0 win against Birkirkara on April 1963 he scored a hat-trick, and the first goal was a header that followed a deep cross.
Theobald had one his best performances in the FA Trophy replay final against Sliema Wanderers on 8th February 1970. He drove his team with his artistry and magic, dominating the midfield so much that Sliema Wanderers − one of the most successful teams − looked average by comparison.
"Theobald's match" though probably happened at the end of January 1963 when Hibernians faced Chelsea, that was close to win the Division 2: the midfielder created magic with his tricks and feints, dancing through the English defence as his life depended on it. His performance was so good that at the end of the match Chelsea's manager Tommy Docherty offered him a contract. Theobald traveled in Summer to London to train with "the Blues" but his father urged him to come back home.
