Sultan is a former goalkeeper. He spent his entire career at Muharraq from 1974 to 1998. He capped for Bahrain 78 times, participating to 9 Arab Gulf Cups and being named three times the best goalkeeper of the tournament. He was also named best Asian goalkeeper in 1994.
Considered one of the most prominent players in Bahrain's history and the greatest goalkeeper the country has ever produced, Sultan attracted the attention of professional clubs thanks to his technical abilities and high efficiency. Unfortunately, Bahrain didn't allow its players to professionalism at the time. Anyway, Sultan's best assets were high agility, a great elevation that helped overcoming his lack of height, and a strong catching ability that he used in most situations. He was comfortable with his feet that he used either for making saves or kicking the ball. His goal kicks, which were more frequent than hand throws, could reach a teammate with an accurate and quite fast trajectory. Probably not the best when far from the posts, he sometimes looked reckless in coming off the goal.
