Salmeen is a former central or attacking midfielder. He spent the majority of his career at Al-Muharraq, where he played from 1999 to 2004, from 2007 to 2009, and from 2010 to 2016. He played also for Qatari team Al-Arabi from 2004 and 2007, and Emirati team Al-Dhafra in 2009-10. A former Bahrain captain, he capped for his country 146 times, scoring 11 goals.
One of the most prominent players in Bahrain's history, Salmeen was a technically gifted midfielder, who used his superb dribbling skill to get past his opponents, making up for his lack of pace. He was fearless, confident in his abilities, and always one of the best in both club and national team despite the numerous injuries he suffered. He possessed a remarkable ball distribution in both short and long passes. Furthermore, he liked going forward to finish an offensive play, showing a nice shooting ability with good accuracy, although lacking of great power.
