Yousef is a former attacking midfielder. His career began in 1995 at Isa Town. He spent the majority of his career at Al-Riffa, where he played from 1998 to 2001, from 2002 to 2004 and from 2008 to 2012. He played also for Malkiya in 2001-02, and in Kuwait for Kuwait SC from 2004 to 2007, Qadsia in 2007-08. He capped for Bahrain 118 times, scoring 28 goals. He was included in the All Star Team of the 2004 AFC Asian Cup, where Bahrain reached the fourth place.
One of the most prominent players in Bahrain's history and a legend in his country, Yousef was an offensive midfielder, sometimes deployed in attack. Relatively short in size, he was distinguished for his superior dribbling skill and powerful shots from outside the penalty area. He scored numerous goals thanks to his shooting abilities and trademark free kicks. Other than being a good finisher, he was an excellent playmaker who could deliver accurate and curled crosses with his right foot. He was often in charge of corner kicks and sometimes of penalties.
