Al-Hayam is a centre back or left back, capable of playing as defensive midfielder. His career began in 2009 at Al-Muharraq, team he's always been playing up to now. He capped for Bahrain 94 times so far. Considered one of the most prominent Bahraini players in recent years, Al-Hayam isn't known for pace and technical skill, but he makes up for the lack with remarkable defensive skills such like good covering and anticipation abilities as well as decent tackling and solid ball-sweeping with the head. He has a good ball distribution, and while he prefers passing the ball short to near teammates, he can send accurate long balls. For this reason, he's sometimes in charge of free kicks from his own half. He's defensive minded as he rarely joins the attack, doing so mostly during set pieces. Even though he's not a scoring defender, he showed in a few occasions that he has a fine left-footed shot. He can use the right foot but he uses his natural left most of the times.
