Ri Kwang-chon is a former centre back, capable of playing as left-back. He spent most of his career at April 25, where he played from 2005 to 2011. He then played in Thailand for Muangthong United and Pattaya United, retiring in 2015. He capped for North Korea 70 times, scoring once and taking part to the 2010 FIFA World Cup as starting left-back.
One of the best North Korean defenders in the second half of the 2000s, Ri Kwang-chon was tenacious, strong and had an excellent defensive awareness as he didn't fear challenging his opponents, often anticipating them, closing the space to prevent a cross, regaining possession of the ball with accurate tackles before starting a new offense. He would carry the ball into midfield whenever he had space, but he would rather distribute it to a near opponent or deliver a long pinpoint pass. And even though he was a natural right-footed, he could use the left pretty well.
