Cha Jong-hyok is a former right-back, occasionally deployed as right wing-back or centre back. His career began in 2005 at Amrokgang in North Korea. He transferred to FC Wil in the Swiss second division, making 113 league appearances in five seasons before retiring in 2015. He capped for North Korea 49 times, taking part to the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
A key player in the North Korean squad during the 2010 World Cup qualifiers, Cha Jong-hyok was a mainly offensive side-back, gifted with remarkable acceleration, high stamina, solid dribbling and accurate crossing. His long balls were often good and reached the target to the point that Cha Jong-hyok was in charge of corner kicks from the right side. He was overall good in defence too as he could mark, close the space and tackle from time to time, helped by his speed and well built physique.
