Hong Yong-jo is a former attacking or side midfielder and winger, occasionally deployed as secondary striker or centre forward. He spent the majority of his career at April 25 in North Korea, playing there from 2004 to 2007 and in 2011-12. He also played in Serbia for Bežanija in 2008 and in Russia for Rostov from 2008 to 2010. He capped for North Korea 51 times, scoring 13 goals and taking part to the 2010 FIFA World Cup as team captain.
One of the most prominent and important players in North Korea throughout the 2000s, Hong Yong-jo was comfortable on either side as well as behind the strikers. He was skillful, fairly quick on the ball, and helpful in defence due to his tracking back ability despite his short size. He had a superb passing skill that enabled him to serve a teammate even in difficult ways and by using either foot. On the other hand, his crosses were often not very accurate. He possessed solid pace, good ball control, excellent and fast dribbling. He wasted no time to shoot whenever he had some space in favourable positions and he scored a fair amount of goals especially with his national team.
