Born in Japan, he began his career at Kawasaki Frontale, making 161 appearances from 2006 to 2010, scoring 64 goals and becoming one of the best strikers in the J.League. He then transferred to Germany, having a good spell at Bochum from 2010 to January 2012 and an underwhelming one at Köln that lasted one year. He found new life in South Korea at Suwon Samsung Bluewings, scoring 23 goals in 72 matches from 2013 to 2015. He eventually came back to Japan, having a good spell at Shimizu S-Pulse from 2015 to 2020, playing 126 games and scoring 49 goals. He retired in 2021 after short experiences with Albirex Niigata and Machida Zelvia. He capped for North Korea 33 times, scoring 15 goals and taking part to the 2010 FIFA World Cup where he provided the assist for Ji Yun-nam's goal against Brazil. Considered one of the best strikers in North Korea's history, Jong Tae-se was nicknamed "the People's Rooney" though his style of play was inspired to Didier Drogba. Jong Tae-se was distinguished mostly for his combination of strength, ball control and dribbling that allowed him to face any kind of opponent, defend the ball and find space to shoot or pass the ball. He even managed to trouble noneother than Brazilian defender Lúcio at the 2010 World Cup. He wasn't notably quick, showing sporadic glimpses of short sprints, but he was very dynamic. He moved a lot outside of the opposition's area in order to receive the ball in midfield and start the offense with fairly accurate passes that he could pull off even when turning or when the space in front of him was covered by one or two defenders. He liked shooting from any possible position, wasting no time and showing a remarkable shot technique. He was comfortable with either foot, very good in the air, in possession of an excellent heading ability, and sometimes a threat from free kick. Spoiler: show |
