INFO:
Samir Mohamed Ali is a former goalkeeper. His career started in the 1950s in Sudan at Al-Ahli Khartoum. He transferred to Egypt in 1962, signing for Zamalek even though he was thinking about joining Al-Ahly. Initially deployed as left-winger, he was turned into a goalkeeper after the injury of Zamalek's starting keeper. While he often alternated with the second goalkeeper, he played numerous matches for Zamalek, conceding only 11 goals in five seasons and winning two times the Egyptian Premier League. He then played in Kuwait for Al-Arabi until he retired in 1978. An international player, he represented Sudan at the 1959 African Cup of Nations. He reportedly played more or less 500 matches in his entire career, conceding 115 goals.
Considered one of the best goalkeepers in Zamalek's and Sudan's history, Ali had in ball catching, positioning and vision his best qualities, making up for his not big physique. And while those qualities decreased during his time in Kuwait, he was still able of giving a great contribution. He rarely came off his goal unless he had to collect a safe high ball. Also, he could give the ball great speed in long goal kicks, although the passes were often too short and not very accurate. To confirm his abilities even more, Ali excelled also in a friendly game against English team West Ham in 1966, won 5-1 by Zamalek.
