Fares was a right-half or right-back. His career started at young age at Al-Hilal Omdurman in 1950. He transferred to Al-Ahli Saudi one year later. He impressed so much that he was sold to Egyptian giants Al-Ahly in 1953. He returned in Sudan at Al-Hilal in 1955 and once again at Al-Ahly from 1956 to 1959. He then made one last comeback at Al-Hilal before retiring in 1960 after making over 100 appearances for the team. A member of Sudan national team in its early years, he was the MVP in the team's debut match won 5-1 against Ethiopia in 1956 and capped at least 15 times.
One of Sudan's biggest legends and one of the pillars of the national team, Fares was tall but slender, versatile, gifted with a powerful shot on both feet, and known for his innate talent, brilliancy, strength, speed, creativity and ability to close the space to his opponents. And he proved himself by showing his abilities also outside his country. Furthermore, he used to double his effort whenever his team was in numerical disadvantage due to a teammate being sent off. Despite filling a defensive role, Fares scored some memorable goals: against Al-Merrikh in 1955 and 1956, Budapest Honvéd in 1956 with a powerful long range shot, Syria and Al-Ahly Shendi in 1957, and Zamalek in a 1958 friendly. After a match between Al-Ahly and Zamalek where he was deployed in the center of the defence, he earned the nickname "High Dam" thanks to his legendary performance as he completely nullified all opposition's attacking plays.
